You probably know that we feature quite some poster designs on our website every week, and every Sunday we feature some movie posters. Last week I came across an interesting blogpost series made by Christophe Courtois, he made quite a collection with movie posters and put them together according to their genre. You will all see what he tried to show in one glance. Every genre has the same poster style these days. If you look at posters from 50 years back, they’re really cool and creative. If you look at nowadays posters, I think some of them are still amazing, but now that I have seen this, most of them aren’t that creative as they where before…

From Wikipedia:

March of the Penguins (French: La Marche de l’empereur) is a 2005 French nature documentary film. It was directed and co-written by Luc Jacquet, and co-produced by Bonne Pioche and the National Geographic Society. The film depicts the yearly journey of the emperor penguins of Antarctica. In autumn, all the penguins of breeding age (five years old and over) leave the ocean, their normal habitat, to walk inland to their ancestral breeding grounds. There, the penguins participate in a courtship that, if successful, results in the hatching of a chick. For the chick to survive, both parents must make multiple arduous journeys between the ocean and the breeding grounds over the ensuing months.

It took one year for the two isolated cinematographers Laurent Chalet and Jérôme Maison to shoot the film, which was shot around the French scientific base of Dumont d’Urville in Adélie Land.

The film won the 2005 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.

Winner of the 2010 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature, the film is a call to action to halt mass dolphin kills, change Japanese fishing practices, and to inform and educate the public about the risks, and increasing hazard, of mercury poisoning from dolphin meat.

I have watched the documentary film and not being an activist of any sort myself, I am not so much into its theme which is about stopping dolphin kills. However, I am most impressed with the tenacity and perseverance of the filmmakers in getting their footage. They were threatened on numerous accounts. Though one-sided and somewhat controversial, The Cove is certainly an impeccably crafted film that will stir its audience emotionally.

This is my favourite Thai movie of all time. It is a surrealistic story set in contemporary Bangkok where a village boy (Pod) without a goal in life falls in love with a girl (Jin) who lives for her dreams. The film is frequently compared with the French movie Amelie.

Although I do not understand the theme song, I fell in love with it right away. It was shot like a MTV and very creatively presented.

This sleeper hit was ranked sixth on the Top 10 Best Films of 2005 by Time magazine film critic Richard Corliss. It is not a film easily appreciated but those who like it will find it immensely satisfying.

This wonderfully-made Iranian film won the Oscars for Best Foreign Language Film in 2012 and rightfully so. The plot is very intelligent and the film keeps revealing something new at every turn. This is definitely one of my favourite movies of the year, even better than the best picture winner — The Artist.

Roger Ebert ranked the film No. 1 on his The Best Films of 2011 list and he summed it up very well: “A Separation will become one of those enduring masterpieces watched decades from now”.

Written and directed by Asghar Farhadi, the film boasts a range of superb performances from the ensemble cast who collectively received the Silver Bears for both Best Actor and Best Actress at the Berlinale. The compelling narrative is driven by a taut and finely written script rooted in the particular of Iranian society but which transcends its setting to create a stunning morality play with universal resonance.

When his wife (Leila Hatami) leaves him, Nader (Peyman Moadi) hires a young woman (Sareh Bayat) to take care of his suffering father (Ali-Asghar Shahbazi). But he doesn’t know his new maid is not only pregnant, but also working without her unstable husband’s (Shahab Hosseini) permission. Soon, Nader finds himself entangled in a web of lies manipulation and public confrontations. A Separation is the first ever Iranian film to be awarded the Golden Bear.
